The business world is competitive – duh! That is like saying, “water is wet!” Companies in every industry are striving to gain a competitive advantage, ideally a sustained competitive advantage, over their rivals in their industry. When it comes to strategy, companies that understand their environment better, both micro (internal) and macro (external), give themselves a better chance of achieving a sustained competitive advantage. The PESTEL framework gives strategic leaders and planners a systematic, methodical way to analyze their macro-environment. Companies who can anticipate and/or forecast changes to the macro-environment position themselves to set themselves apart from their rivals. For this assignment, choose a commonly known company and provide information about each of the PESTEL components. Provide more than facts, I want to hear your ANALYSIS, in other words the “so what” about each of the components. For example: If I selected Dell computers, under L (Legal/Regulatory Factors) of PESTEL, I could mention as a fact that a recent European Union vote made it mandatory for all mobile phones, tablets and cameras sold in the EU to be equipped with a USB Type-C charging port. Stating that alone is true and it is a fact. However, what is the “so what” about this decision as it relates to Dell. Will they choose to no longer compete in the European market because they do not want to install USB Type C ports on their products? (likely not) What will this do their production? To their distribution? It is unlikely that whatever company you choose that all six components of PESTEL will have a large impact on your company/industry. Focus your efforts more on the PESTEL components that will have a large impact and provide your analysis. What do you predict? How can your company leverage the macro-environment to achieve or sustain their competitive advantage? If any of the components will not impact your company/industry, briefly mention why.
